Breast Implant Type
At their most basic, breast implants fall into one of two categories –
- Saline: These breast implants are filled with sterile saline solution and have a silicone shell.
- Silicone: These implants have a silicone shell that holds silicone gel inside.
Silicone gel has the consistency most similar to breast tissue, so many women favor this type for its natural results. Saline can be a great option as well.
The potential risk of rupture is one area where these implants differ. With either type of implant, if the shell tears or ruptures, the situation does not pose a health risk and can be remedied by our surgeon. If a saline implant ruptures, the liquid will be absorbed and eventually expelled by your body. You’ll know right away if your saline implant has ruptured because the implant collapses without any liquid in it. Your breast will look different.
The rupture of a silicone implant is not as easy to detect. The gel holds its shape even when a tear in the shell occurs. The gel may stay in the shell or it may leak into the breast pocket. Dr. Agha will let you know how to monitor this type of implant for any sign of breakage. MRIs or ultrasounds are sometimes necessary to detect a torn silicone implant.
Breast Implant Size
Picking out a breast implant size is something a lot of our patients look forward to. This is your opportunity to choose the bust fullness you want, not limit yourself to the breast size you were born with.
Ultimately, the choice of size is up to you. Dr. Agha will first examine your chest and current breast size in order to determine the range of breast implant sizes that will work for your body. He’ll let you know if he thinks the size you are considering is too large or too small based on his experience, but ultimately we want you to choose what will make you happiest.
Breast Implant Shape
Breast implants come in two basic shapes –
- Round: Round implants are uniformly round, but they adjust as you lie down or stand up, taking on the shape of natural breast tissue as the fill liquid settles with gravity.
- Anatomic: These teardrop-shaped implants are fuller at the bottom and tapered at the top. In this way, they are designed to mimic the appearance of natural breasts.
Either shape ultimately looks natural once implanted. Dr. Agha will help you weigh the pros and cons of each during your consultation. Usually one shape works better than the other for a particular body frame. One thing to consider is how the implant will look in the unlikely event of rotation, which is an uncommon but potential complication. A teardrop rotation is obvious because it does not have a uniform shape like round implants, but there may be other reasons to consider teardrop implants that outweigh the risk of visible rotation.
