Surgery for Breast Reduction
Women seek breast reduction surgery for a myriad of reasons. In addition to the physical and health benefits, breast reduction offers emotional and psychological benefits that are invaluable to a person’s quality of life. Breast reduction surgery is a life changing surgical procedure that increases comfort and satisfaction while producing smaller, shapelier breasts that are in proportion to the rest of your body. For numerous women, it’s not just the aesthetic issues that they wish to address in considering breast reduction. It is also about feeling proportionally more balanced and without the physical symptoms of larger breasts. No wonder most insurance policies consider breast reduction a medical necessity and cover the costs of the breast reduction surgery and the operating room.
Once you decide that breast reduction surgery is the right choice for you, we will then educate you on the various techniques available. During breast reduction surgery, Dr. Agha makes incisions around the nipple-areola complex (pigmented area). This incision is then extended vertically below the nipple as far as the inframammary crease under the breast. Through these incisions, the excess breast tissue and fat are removed and the nipple-areola moved upward to a more desirable position. So in essence, breast reduction and lift are being performed at the same time.
Dr. Agha employs the dermal-bra suspension breast lift technique to create perkier and shapelier breasts. This novel technique was pioneered by Drs. Rubin and Agha in 2005 and has been published in several plastic surgery textbooks. Although the technique was developed for weight loss patients who experience severe breast changes, the technique offers results that are unmatched by standard breast lift techniques.
After the nipple is moved to its new position, the incisions are then closed around the nipple and over the lifted breast. The surgery will take approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on the degree of macromastia and the amount of breast tissue that needs to be excised.
You would be amazed at how little weight needs to come off to feel a big difference. Certain breast reduction and lift procedures are also appropriate for younger women as well as those who wish to address asymmetrical breasts.
After breast reduction surgery, much of the swelling and bruising will disappear within the first few weeks after surgery. However, it may take up to six months before the breasts settle into their new shape. Make sure you follow Dr. Agha’s post-breast reduction surgery instructions so that you do not do anything to create an opening in your incision. The incision site should be kept very clean so that it does not become infected. Openings and infection could affect the appearance of your scar.
Breast reduction is performed either on an outpatient basis at an ambulatory surgical care facility or in the hospital. Patients can typically go home the day of their surgery, but occasionally an overnight stay is recommended. We can advise on recovery facilities if you would like additional private post-operative care in the days following surgery.
Scars after a breast reduction surgery will usually take 6-12 months to fade away. There are a variety of topical creams and gels used to help with the appearance of scars.
