Mommy Makeover

Mommy Makeover Surgery

Why is Mommy Makeover surgery a good choice after pregnancy?

For most of us, pregnancy and childbirth changes our bodies. It’s often not that easy to restore your body after a baby! You may find that certain areas of fat, sagging and inelasticity persist regardless of your attempts to diet and exercise. Even those celebrity mothers who seem to bounce right back to a flat tummy after birth have probably had to work hard to restore their post-baby bodies, and they may have gotten an assist by way of a mommy makeover or other body contouring procedure.

Dr. Siamak Agha is a board-certified plastic surgeon. He’s a dedicated husband and father, and has met many mothers over the years wanting to refresh certain parts of their bodies after childbirth. He is personally committed to helping you reach your goals. To learn more, please call our Newport Beach practice at 949-644-2442.

Mommy Makeover Candidates

During pregnancy, it’s normal to gain weight, which may get stored as excess fat in your breasts, thighs, tummy and elsewhere. The breasts grow, the tummy expands. These things stretch your skin and the supporting muscles of your abdomen. Each woman is unique, and there will certainly be other changes that you notice that are individual to your experience. If you want to change any of these things, a mommy makeover may be right for you.

A mom makeover is a comprehensive package of surgeries. It typically involves 1-3 cosmetic procedures aimed at addressing the physical changes caused by pregnancy and restoring your confidence in your physical appearance. Typical treatment areas include:

  • Breasts
  • Abdomen
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Back
  • Hips

During a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Agha, you’ll discuss the changes you have noticed and what you’d like to see. Once Dr. Agha determines your candidacy for a mommy makeover, he’ll recommend those options he knows will work for your goals.

Common Procedures included in a Mommy Makeover

A tummy tuck and breast lift surgery are quite typical. As your abdomen stretches during pregnancy, the skin may become lined with stretch marks. The skin itself may have a deflated, puffy appearance after you’ve given birth. It is not uncommon for the muscles overlying the abdomen to stretch so much that they tear or become separated, a condition known as diastasis recti. Your belly may pooch out as a result of this condition. Tummy tuck surgery corrects all this and restores a flatter abdomen (although stretch marks may remain if they are not located on the skin that is removed during a tummy tuck).

The breasts also stretch and enlarge during pregnancy and throughout breastfeeding. Once they begin to return to a normal size, the skin may sag and droop without the volume to support the skin. Your areolas may become stretched and may point downward. Overall, you may feel like your breasts don’t have the same shape they used to. A breast lift restores rounder, firmer, perkier breasts.

The exact combination of procedures depends on the conclusions drawn by you and Dr. Agha during your consultation. This procedure is all about the individual patient – the parts of your physique you’d like to refresh and enhance, and how you want to look afterward.

When You Will See Mommy Makeover Results

The recovery timeline depends on which procedures are included. Generally, a tummy tuck has the longest recovery period. You should plan to take 1-3 weeks off from work. We’ll zero in on the exact downtime once you have selected specific procedures.

Most of these procedures require you to avoid heavy lifting for 4-6 weeks. You’ll need to have your spouse, a family member or trusted friend help you with some of the household chores and other duties that require lifting or bending. Picking up your kids will have to be avoided during this time.

Your exercise routine will need to be adjusted as well. While it is important to get up and walk around starting right after surgery, strenuous activity will be restricted for 2-6 weeks, depending on the procedures you receive. Let us know what activities are part of your routine – running, swimming, weight lifting, kickboxing, yoga, dance, etc. – and our team will let you know how much downtime to expect. We’ll also discuss how to gradually re-enter these activities once your body is ready.

The results of a mommy makeover are lasting. Depending on the procedure, it may be at least a few months before the final results are apparent. Swelling is normal right after surgery. As the swelling falls away, you’ll be able to see the re-shaping, tightening, augmentation or other enhancement that you’ve elected.
